How to choose your size for winter knitwear and coats
Sizes differ from brand to brand, so the safest method is to compare with something you already wear and like. Here is how, in about two minutes.
Compare with a garment you already own
Lay a sweater, cardigan or coat that fits you well on a flat surface and measure it with a tape. Measure across the chest from armpit to armpit and double it, then measure the shoulder seam to seam, the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff, and the length from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. Then compare those numbers with the size chart on our size guide, which is in inches and centimetres.
Think about what goes underneath
Winter pieces are worn over other layers. If you plan to wear a coat over a thick sweater, or a cardigan over a shirt and a thermal, leave room for them. The usual advice is to choose the larger size when you are between two sizes. This is also what our size guide says.
Knitwear and coats fit differently
- Knit sweaters and cardigans stretch a little and soften with wear, so a close fit is comfortable.
- Tailored coats do not stretch much. Check the shoulder and sleeve measurements carefully, because a coat that is tight across the shoulders is hard to fix.
