How to care for faux fur and knitwear
Winter pieces last for years if they are washed gently, dried flat and stored well. This is the routine we follow for our knitwear and faux fur.
First, read the label
The care label sewn into your piece always comes first. The routine below is a safe default: hand wash cold, dry flat in the shade, and never wring.
Washing knitwear
- Turn the piece inside out before washing.
- Use cold water and a mild detergent made for delicates or wool.
- Press the water through the knit with your hands. Do not rub, twist or wring, because wet knit stretches and does not fully spring back.
- Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear, then press out the water with a clean towel, rolling it up with the piece inside.
Drying and reshaping
- Lay the piece flat on a dry towel, in the shade. Sun and heaters can fade colour and stiffen the yarn.
- Gently shape it back to its size while it is damp: smooth the shoulders, straighten the cuffs and hem.
- Never hang a wet or heavy knit. The weight pulls the shoulders out of shape.
Looking after faux fur
- Brush gently in the direction of the fur with a soft brush or a wide-tooth comb to lift it and keep it from matting.
- For marks, dab with a cloth that is slightly damp. Avoid soaking a faux-fur collar or cuff.
- Keep it away from heat. A hair dryer, iron or radiator can melt the fibres and leave them rough.
- If it gets wet, shake it out and let it dry in open air, away from direct heat, then brush it again.
Pilling
Small balls of fibre, called pills, are normal on knitwear, mostly where the piece rubs against a bag strap or your arms. Remove them with a fabric comb or a fabric shaver, lightly, and never pull them off by hand, which damages the knit.
Storing it for the season
- Wash or air out a piece before putting it away, since stains and body oils attract moths.
- Fold knitwear on a shelf instead of hanging it.
- Use a breathable cotton bag or a box, not a sealed plastic bag, so the fabric does not trap damp.
- Hang coats on a wide, shaped hanger.
Coats
Brush a coat lightly after wearing it and air it out before hanging it away. Spot clean small marks. If a coat needs a full clean, take it to a dry cleaner and show them the care label.
